Russia will withdraw its peacekeeping contingent from Georgia to the temporary security zone by August 22. The rest of the troops will be moved back to South Ossetia and Russia. President Medvedev made the promise in a telephone conversation with France's President Sarkozy on Tuesday.

Georgia has closed its last remaining Russian-language television channel, RTVi, after it broadcast an interview with the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov. The move was reported on Monday by Russian radio channel Ekho Moskvy, an affiliate of RTVi.

Russian military forces are beginning their pull-out from the Georgian-South Ossetian conflict zone and will return to their previous positions defined by their peacekeeping mandate. The withdrawal is part of a six-point peace plan drawn-up by Russia and France and follows a weekend conversation between their leaders, Dmitry Medvedev and Nicolas Sarkozy.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has signed a French-brokered peace plan to end hostilities in Georgia’s breakaway region of South Ossetia. The ceasefire deal was signed by the Georgian President on Friday – although Russia's Foreign Minister says there are slight differences between the two versions.
